Testing Information for Parents

Parents,

As you know, 3rd through 5th grade students at Paine Elementary will be engaged in ACT Aspire testing beginning next week.  Our testing window is April 25-May 5, however, students will only test 3 days during this testing window.  Your child’s teacher will send you the specific testing dates and times for your child’s class if she hasn’t done so already.  Make up testing will take place on Wednesday, May 4, in the afternoon, and Thursday, May 5.

One way you can help your child prepare for the ACT Aspire is to have them practice using the tools for the upcoming tests via this link: http://actaspire.pearson.com/exemplars.html.  Instructions for logging on to each specific practice test are listed on the site.  Our students have learned how to use these tools during their computer lab specials time with Mrs. Long, but we highly recommend doing this at home at least once before the test.

Please take note of the Digital Device Policy from the State of Alabama that applies to standardized testing.

  • The possession of a digital device (including but not limited to cell phones, MP3 players, cameras, or other telecommunication devices capable of capturing or relaying information) is strictly prohibited during the administration of a secure test.  If a student is observed in possession of a digital device during the administration of a secure test then the device will be confiscated.
  • If a student is observed using a digital device during the administration of a secure test, testing for the student will cease, the device will be confiscated and is subject to search, the student will be dismissed from testing, and the student’s test will be invalidated.

We encourage our students not to bring digital devices to school during the week of testing, but we also understand that many of our students rely on these devices to read books and for communicating with parents before or after school hours.  If your child needs to bring a digital device to school, they must turn the device in to their teacher before testing each day.  The teacher will place the device in a bin and it will be removed from the classroom during testing.  The device will be kept in a secure place and will be returned to the student after testing concludes for the day.  If the device is in the classroom during testing, it will be confiscated.  Please discuss this state policy with your children and have them leave all digital devices at home during testing if possible.

We are looking forward to a great week of testing.  If you have any questions, please let us know.

Sincerely,

Christy Naylor

TAC-April 2016

1.     Can the scaled scores from the Star Test and Global Scholar scores be added to the class rosters sent to teachers for their students for the upcoming school year?

Yes, this information is being added to the rating card and the Primary and Intermediate rating cards are being merged into one.

2.     Would it be possible to form a “Class Roll” committee? The committee would then have a representative from each grade level.

This is dependent upon the principal of each school.

3. Would it be possible to revise the student data spreadsheet used to create rolls? Adding Reading scaled score, Math Global Scholar score, and revise “how” a student is given a 1, 2, or 3 based on data that is consistent among the school.

Adding the scaled score from Reading and the Math Global Scholar score will create a more complex picture of the overall student.  The 1, 2, and 3 will still be teacher opinion.

Announcements for the Week:

As we get closer to testing, let's begin reminding parents of our testing dates (April 25-29). Please include this information in newsletters home. Student attendance is very important during testing and we’d love for them to be able to test with their peers, and not on make-up day.

We had a very successful first full week back from Spring Break! Students have been beyond engaged in their learning and the lessons. As the weather continues to warm, classroom management will need to be top-notch. Keep great order in class and eyes on your students!

Have a fabulous & safe weekend!!
