We are the WINNERS!!! Birmingham Reads Book Drive Winners Announced
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
What an amazing book
drive you organized! The 15 schools involved in the 2015 Birmingham Reads Book
Drive Challenge collected more than 41,000 books for under-privileged
children in our area! That’s right – 41 THOUSAND!!!! These books
will go home with the kids who need them most and will be treasured for years
to come.
We are all astounded
by the success. Many thanks to each and every one of you for the hard work and
enthusiasm you put into this event. We had so much fun meeting you as we
unloaded the cars and vans and SUVs full of beautiful books. You should all be
proud. Please accept the deepest gratitude from Better Basics and the Junior
League of Birmingham.
This
year, Paine Elementary won the Birmingham Reads Book Drive Challenge
by collecting more than 6,000 books! Vestavia Hills Elementary School-Cahaba
Heights won the challenge to collect the most books per pupil, with more than
6.3 books collected per student! Congratulations to these winners and to
each of you. You are all winners because your efforts will make a big
difference for children, who without the books collected by your schools,
would not have these wonderful books!
I hope you will join
us next year as the Birmingham Reads project enters its seventh year serving
the community.
Thank you again for
all of your support. You were fabulous!
T.A.C. (April)
1. Can we please have an end of the year party instead of a Valentines party?
3rd and 4th grade classes can have an end of the year party, but 5th grade has the Extravaganza. Valentine’s Day should be a small snack and pass out Valentines cards at the end of the day, but no parents involved. So, our parties for 2015-2016 will be: Christmas Holiday Party and an End of the Year Party (5th grade-End of the Year Extravaganza).
2. Red Hall Specials/planning time has been slighted on several occasions this year. When planning for special events next year, could consideration be given to Red Hall to receive its full time?
We will try to consider all classes Specials times.
3. When assemblies run late, it is not fair for the first group (8:45-9:35) to be held in classrooms until the assembly is over. This takes away from our planning periods. What are options to remedy this problem?
PE will go into the amphitheater or outside. Everyone else should be able to go at their assigned time special.
3b. Can a better plan be made regarding “special” performances/events during the Yellow Halls’ Specials time? Twice this year part or all of our planning time was taken due to a concert or performance, while some of the other grade levels/teams still got their entire planning periods. We realize adjustments have to be made and flexibility is required of us, but the same group tends to get “jipped” throughout the year. This also happens with the Yellow Hall when assemblies run late.
Specialists will monitor students; teachers have the option of their planning time or the performance. Autumm and Kristi will make some revisions to upcoming events.
4. The lunchroom is INCREDIBLY loud during the 11:30-12:05 group. The standard for students isn’t consistent across grade levels during lunchtime and not all teachers monitor students’ noise level. Can we go back to using the red cups (first ten minutes are silent) to cut down on noise? This also helps with the slow eaters.
We will go back to using red cups/green cups starting Monday, May 4th, but teachers can feel free to put students on silent lunch. The first 10 minutes on red cups and teachers can get a student to watch the clock and change it to green.
5. We have noticed the courtyard is chaotic when the third and fifth graders are out there at the same time with only one monitor. The kids are all over the place and doing dangerous activities without being carefully supervised. We didn’t think students were supposed to have sports balls other than four-square (such as footballs or tennis balls). We were also under the impression that students were only allowed to walk around the sidewalk, play four-square, or sit on the steps. There have been numerous times when we have seen kids hurt or about to get hurt while getting our students. Students (and teachers) walking back to class have gotten hit by footballs played with during “Jackpot.” Even though the students and teachers enjoy this time, we are concerned about how dangerous it has become. Are there any improvements that can be made?
This has been covered in afternoon announcements.
6. The average total cost for a teacher to fully supply a classroom is $450-$500. Many times students come in without any supplies and we have to buy more. The students are also not taking pride in their things since they are given to them when the year begins. They also think there is an endless supply for the rest of the year which the above mentioned cost cannot provide. Could students purchase their own basic supplies? The teacher would supply specific notebooks, folders, binders, steno pads, composition books, etc. to use in his/her classroom. Hopefully the students would take more pride in their things and we are still having the issue of students bringing in their own supplies throughout the year to replace worn and lost things.
You can ask for donations for items such as pencils and other supplies from parents at the end of each quarter.
7. How are CAD leaders selected? How often do they rotate? Do teachers get any input into their leaders?
The decision on how we select CAD leaders has not been made. We will get that info out to staff after a decision has been made.
8. When making the decision to not make a late start/early dismissal, are teachers and staff members that do not live in the Trussville Community taken into consideration? The fact that many staff members have to travel in dangerous conditions because “there is no ice in Trussville” is very concerning; some people can’t hop on a four wheeler and get home.
See the administrator regarding any travel concerns. Early dismissal and late arrivals are a system-wide decision and not PI.
9. What are the expectations of staff members on days when there are weather emergencies? Is everyone expected to stay? Is it ok for Classified personnel to leave early if Certified personnel is expected to stay? Also, will we be creating a formal system of compensation like in other schools systems (Vestavia paid ALL school employees that spent the night last year $750 each for helping)?
A survey was sent out about these questions and we will handle this on a case-by-case situation. Please see an administrator for your specific issue. If payment of staff was ever considered, it would be handled from the TCBOE

Pink Engineers Club @ PI
The Pink Engineers Club from HTHS came over to work with
our girls in Engineering Club, Science Olympiad, Math Team and GaTE. They led
our aspiring engineers through teamwork and collaborative activities, discussed
what engineering is all about, shared what engineering classes, clubs, and
academies are available at the middle and high school level, and finally
challenged our girls to find a way to build the tallest free-standing tower out
of select materials...problem-solving at its best!

Please keep Jana Field's dad and her family in your prayers:
"My dad was put into the hospital this weekend. They
discovered yesterday that he had a mild heart attack and a blood clot in his
lung. He had a CT scan late yesterday afternoon to find out how large the
clot is and how to begin treatment. He was tired from testing yesterday
and worried because of not knowing what is going to happen. In need of
prayers from the many prayer warriors at our school!"
Thank you,
