A Peek in Joy Wright's 3rd Grade Class

Joy conducted a lesson on writing letters and addressing envelopes.  Her students used the book The Journey of Oliver K. Woodman as a guide to letter writing.

Joy has honed her classroom management skills to include a soft voice and calm directions.  When students were working in pairs and Joy needed their attention, she raised her hand and called, "Huskies" in a normal tone of voice. Students immediately stopped talking and working to put their focus on Joy.  Also notice in the picture above that Joy has her students gathered close to her on the carpet as she teaches them  the parts of an envelope.  Gathering students close is a good way to gain their attention and gauge their thinking.
